Malfinis Film & Animation Inc. started out as Malfinis Theatre Co., a Theatrical and Illustrative Arts Production and Training House, focusing mainly upon:
Production of plays for radio, stage, street theatre and film
Training and managing of dramatic writers for comedy
Production management
Production of stage plays and musicals
Design and production of stage sets
The name Malfinis is the creole name given to the island’s sole indigenous raptor, the Chicken Hawk, however it also carries the meaning of “evil is finished”. The inspiration for the company name, was based on the theatre production of the play “Malfinis” written by Mr. Branford’s mentor Roderick Walcott.
The Company works in both the English and Creole Languages, using the powerful combination of Education-Entertainment (Edutainment) to impart messages. With this vision, the Malfinis Theatre Co. produced the powerful and popular “Apwe Plezi” -- A radio drama produced for the RARE Center for Tropical Conservation. It was the first drama with a family planning theme. Followed by “Callaloo” – A radio drama that aired in 15 Caribbean Countries and focused on the biodiversity of the regions through drama.
Malfinis Film and Animation Inc. began with the mandate of replicating the objective of its predecessor, but within the realm of Film, Animation and Video Production. With the explosion in popularity of animation, the company has widened its focus on all things informative from Climate Change to Caribbean Integration, Disaster Management.
The mission of Malfinis has not changed since its days of theatrical productions. We remain dedicated to the training of young talent, currently with a focus on Animation and Visual Effects. Malfinis is also incubating new departments to ensure a wide range of services can be offered, and provide alternative sources of income in the creative industry for young professionals. These sectors include, but are not limited to: game development, computer generated imagery (CGI) and 3D animation.
Malfinis collaborates with top players in the industry such as ToonBoom, who has supported our initiative in animation from day one. We also collaborate with other production companies within the region to improve deliverability on larger projects. For instance, we have worked with Full Circle Animation Studio from Trinidad and Tobago on HBO’s “Animals.” and ShadowMachine’s “Dallas and Robo”. We recognise that through collaboration and our training efforts, we build an environment for young creatives to live their dream careers and give back to the creative sector. We operate under the motto: “Malfinis does not subscribe to insularity.”
